How to measure your wrist

1. Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm (⅜ in) wide and 25 cm (10 in) long, or use a soft tape measure.
2. Wrap it around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where a watch normally sits.
3. Mark where the paper overlaps, keeping it snug but not tight.
4. Lay the strip flat and measure from the end to the mark with a ruler.
5. Measure twice — wrists swell slightly in heat and later in the day.

The printable wrist sizer in the pack has a ruler printed on the strip. Print it at 100% scale and check the 5 cm calibration line with a ruler before cutting.

Watch strap size chart

Strap lengths are usually written as short/long, such as 75/115 mm. The fit also depends on the watch case: a larger case with longer lugs adds length around the wrist, so the same strap fits a slightly smaller wrist on a big watch. These figures are typical for two-piece leather, rubber and fabric straps; each brand publishes its own chart.

Lug width: the other measurement that matters

Lug width is the distance between the two lugs where the strap attaches, measured in millimetres. A strap must match it exactly — a 20 mm strap on a 22 mm watch leaves gaps, and a 22 mm strap will not fit between 20 mm lugs. Lug width is often printed on the back of the original strap or in the watch manual. Otherwise, measure between the inside edges of the lugs with a ruler or calipers.

These are typical pairings, not rules; some 40 mm watches have 22 mm lugs and many dress watches use narrow lugs. Measure your own watch before ordering.

Smartwatch bands

Smartwatch bands usually attach with a proprietary connector sized to the case, so buy bands labelled for your case size. Many are sold in two lengths, such as S/M and M/L, with a wrist range printed on the packaging or product page. If your wrist falls in the overlap of the two ranges, choose by preference: the smaller size gives a neater tail, the larger leaves room for warm days and sleeves. Measure your wrist and compare with the maker’s current size guide before ordering.

Sizing a metal bracelet

A metal bracelet is sized by removing or adding links. Each link has a pin or screw; many have small arrows on the inside showing which direction to push the pin out. To keep the clasp centred on the underside of the wrist, remove links evenly from both sides. The calculator estimates how many to remove from the current inner length and link size; fine-tune with the micro-adjustment holes in the clasp.

1. Measure the bracelet’s inner length with it closed, or count links and multiply by link length.
2. Subtract your target inner length.
3. Divide by link length and round down.
4. Remove half the links from each side of the clasp.
5. Try it on and use the clasp micro-adjustment for the final fit.

How tight should a watch be?

A watch should sit just above the wrist bone and move slightly without sliding over the hand. A common test is to fit one finger between the strap and your wrist. For fitness tracking, a snugger fit keeps the optical sensor in contact with the skin; for everyday wear, a slightly looser fit is more comfortable, especially in warm weather.

Worked example

A 17 cm wrist with a comfortable fit gives a target inner length of about 18 cm. The calculator suggests a regular 75/115 mm strap, which usually fits wrists from about 15.5 to 19 cm. For a 40 mm case, the likely lug width is 20 mm, confirmed by measuring between the lugs. The steel bracelet on the same watch has an inner length of 200 mm with 7 mm links, so removing 2 links — one from each side of the clasp — brings it to 186 mm, and the clasp micro-adjustment takes up the rest.

Strap materials and fit

• Leather — softens and stretches slightly over time; start snug.
• Rubber and silicone — stable length; best for sport and water.
• NATO and nylon — one-piece straps that pass under the watch; long tails are tucked into keepers.
• Mesh (Milanese) — sliding clasp gives stepless adjustment.
• Metal bracelets — adjusted by links; heavier and less forgiving of wrist swelling.
